Civil War Living History

Westhampton Beach, NY

August 4, 2018

The Westhampton Beach Historical Society invited the local Civil War living history community to put on a demonstration on the village's Great Lawn which included the 10th NY Cavalry, the 6th NY Independent Battery, the 9th Virginia, and 30th Virginia. Bill Sommers from the 10th NY Cavalry provided a surgeon's impression and there was a tent where period dressed historians read 'War Letters'. We each had our turn doing demonstrations on the Great Lawn however we were unfortunately hit with periods of downpours that periodically halted our performances. Despite the rain, we attracted quite a crowd that fled to the shelter of our respective canvas flys. And during dry breaks, the spectators returned in force. When we finished, we were invited to the Historical Society's fancy fundraiser where we dined on fine, catered food that included mountains of fresh seafood and an open bar! That's the way to end the day!
